The New Ghost: Selected Poems restores to view one of the most distinctive yet neglected voices of early twentieth-century British poetry. Writing at the intersection of Georgian lyricism and Modernist literary culture, Shove developed a singular poetic vision in which the natural world, domestic life and the rhythms of ordinary experience open on to deeper mysteries of spiritual existence, offering a distinctive response to the uncertainties of the modern age.

Despite early critical acclaim and being widely anthologised, Shove gradually withdrew from literary life, leaving behind a substantial body of unpublished work. Bringing together poems from her three collections and previously uncollected material, this volume presents her poetry not as a literary curiosity, but as a living and compelling achievement deserving a place in the story of twentieth-century poetry.

About the author

Fredegond Cecily Shove (1889–1949) was an English poet, the daughter of an eminent legal historian, whose family included Virginia Woolf and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Once acclaimed and widely anthologised, she was best known in her lifetime for her two collections of her poetry, Dreams and Journeys (including some of her best-known poems, ‘The Farmer 1917’ and ‘The New Ghost’, 1918) and Daybreak (published in 1922 by Virginia and Leonard Woolf through the Hogarth Press), as well as a study, Christina Rossetti (1931). Althogh a final collection appeared after her death, in 1956, her work has been unjustly neglected in intervening years.
